Jack Michael Antonoff (born March 31, 1984) is an American vocaliser, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and record producer. Antonoff is the pb singer of rock ring Bleachers, and was a guitarist and drummer in the indie rock band Fun. He was previously the lead vocalist of the indie rock band Steel Train. Aside from his work with Bleachers and Fun, Antonoff has worked as a songwriter and record producer with various artists, including Tegan and Sara, Taylor Swift, Lorde, St. Vincent, Florence + The Machine, Lana Del Rey, Kevin Abstract, Carly Rae Jepsen, the Chicks and Clairo. Antonoff has been credited with having a significant impact on the sound of gimmicky popular music.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [vii]
Antonoff has been nominated for a Golden Earth Laurels and won vi Grammy Awards, including the 2022 Grammy for Producer of the Twelvemonth. He has also won Grammy Awards for his work with Fun., for production on Taylor Swift'south albums 1989 and Sociology, for product on St. Vincent's anthology Daddy'south Dwelling house, and one with St. Vincent for co-writing the title track on Masseduction.
Early on life [edit]
Antonoff was born on March 31, 1984, in Bergenfield, New Bailiwick of jersey.[8] He is the 2nd of three children of Shira (Wall) and Rick Antonoff.[ix] He is the younger brother of fashion designer Rachel Antonoff.[10] His younger sister, Sarah, died of brain cancer at the age of 13 when Antonoff was a senior in high school.[eleven] The upshot had a profound effect on Jack who has said "... my whole career has been revisiting that through a different lens."[12]
Antonoff is Jewish.[thirteen] [14] He grew up in New Milford, New Bailiwick of jersey, and Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, and attended uncomplicated school at the Solomon Schechter Solar day School of Bergen County.[15] [xvi] For high school, he and his sis commuted to Manhattan, to nourish the Professional Children's School.[x]
During his sophomore twelvemonth of loftier school, he and several friends from elementary school formed a punk rock band called Outline[15] in November 1998. They released a self-titled EP through a friend'south record label in January 2000. In 2002, Antonoff and friend, Scott Irby-Ranniar, formed the band Steel Train—Antonoff was the lead vocalizer,[20] and they recruited drummer Matthias Gruber. The band then convinced two of their friends from the ring Random Chore, Evan Winiker and Matthew Goldman, to drop out of college to bring together the new band.[xv] Steel Railroad train secured a recording deal with Drive-Thru Records.[15] The group was pop on the jamband festival circuit and Antonoff has said he has practical that grassroots mentality to his future projects.[21]

In 2008, Nate Ruess (formerly the frontman of the Format) asked Antonoff to bring together him and Andrew Dost (formerly of Anathallo) in a new ring, which became fun.[22] Antonoff was already well acquainted with Ruess and Dost, as their former bands had all toured together.[22] The new band released its debut album, Aim and Ignite, in 2009.[23] Fun's second album, Some Nights (2012), produced the ring's first number-i hit single, "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae). The song was co-written past Antonoff with Ruess, Dost, and Jeff Bhasker.[24] Fun then played with their musical heroes Queen in September 2013 at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, which was held at the MGM Thou Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Antonoff played Brian May's guitar during the rehearsal, which he described as the "nearly surreal experience ever."[25] The band then released a free six-song EP in Dec 2013, titled Before Shane Went to Bangkok: Fun Live in the The states.[23]
Bleachers [edit]

Antonoff announced a solo project called Bleachers in February 2014.[26] Antonoff stated in June 2022 that the project had been a consideration for around 10 years, and the proper noun was inspired by the "disconnected, darker side" of suburban youth and John Hughes movies, which were "tied to a fourth dimension when big songs were groovy songs." The songs for the debut Bleachers album were mostly written on Antonoff's laptop computer in hotel rooms during a Fun. world tour.[eleven]
The Huffington Post published a positive review of Bleachers' first single, "I Wanna Get Meliorate"—released on February eighteen—calling it the "catchiest song of 2014,"[27] while Fourth dimension proclaimed, "[Bleachers] is more than fun than Fun."[28] Antonoff revealed the intent behind the debut unmarried in a Rolling Stone interview:
I wanted to bridge the gap between Disclosure and Arcade Burn down—something both streamlined and organic ... The production and songwriting is extremely over-the-top, extremely epic and unapologetic. The record is all about finding a world where y'all can be kind to yourself in.[26]
Antonoff explained to Rolling Stone that, while the vocal might sound joyous, "it'due south very desperate" and, like many of the other songs on the album is most loss.[26] Antonoff worked with producers John Hill and Vince Clarke on the Bleachers studio album, as he sought to create "massive, beautiful pop songs that sound fuckin' cool." The completed album, Strange Desire, was released in July 2014, and "I Wanna Get Improve" peaked at number 1 on the U.S. Alternative charts during the same week. In regard to Foreign Desire, Antonoff said:
It doesn't have to be ane or the other ... You don't accept to [make] big pop songs that sound stupid and you lot don't take to make these fuckin' apologetic, tired droney songs that sound incredible. I actually wanted both things to happen.[26]
"I Wanna Get Better" was eventually named number 18 in Rolling Stone 's 50 Best Songs of 2014, with the publication describing the song as "therapy rock" that is "as fun as information technology is cathartic".[29] Antonoff released Bleachers' second album Gone Now on June 2, 2017. Its lead single "Don't Take the Money" peaked at number two on Culling Radio.[30]
Taylor Swift [edit]
"Sweeter than Fiction", a vocal Antonoff wrote and produced with American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for the 2013 film Ane Chance, was released. The vocal was written in Antonoff's New York City apartment after he and Swift shared a love of a particular snare drum sound from a Fine Young Cannibals vocal. They brainstormed ideas by electronic mail before starting the songwriting process.[11] [31]
Swift and Antonoff wrote and produced three songs together on Swift'south fifth studio album 1989, including the single, "Out of the Woods", "I Wish You Would", and the bonus track "Y'all Are In Honey". 1989 was released in October 2014, and became the biggest-selling album in the U.S. in 2014.[32] On the deluxe version of the album, Swift explains in a vocalism memo that the vocal "I Wish Y'all Would" originated from a guitar track that Antonoff had recorded on his smartphone. After Swift first heard the rail, she asked Antonoff if she could develop the thought further, and it eventually became an album track afterward both songwriters were satisfied with Swift's work.[33] The album won Antonoff a Grammy Accolade for Anthology of the Twelvemonth in 2016.

In 2019, Swift and Antonoff wrote eight songs and produced eleven songs together for Swift'due south seventh studio anthology Lover, including the promotional single "The Archer", and the title rail, which served as the album's third unmarried.[38] [39]

In 2017, Antonoff co-wrote and produced Lorde'southward Melodrama which was released in June. USAToday described it as "the best pop album of 2022 and so far".[44] Rolling Stone 'south praises Jack's production specifically, noting that he uses "empty space to spectacular consequence, [as] the arrangements veer from stark clarity to delirium."[44] In back up of the anthology, Antonoff appeared in the music video for its atomic number 82 single, "Light-green Light".[45] He and so performed "Liability" alongside Lorde on Sabbatum Nighttime Live.[46] The album also received a nomination for the 2022 Grammy Honor for Anthology of the Year.[47] Start from 2022 until 2021, Antonoff co-wrote, produced, and performed on Lorde's tertiary album Solar Power.
Love, Simon [edit]
In 2018, Antonoff produced the soundtrack for the 20th Century Fox romantic one-act-drama pic Love, Simon. Bleachers also contributed four songs. On June 26, 2019, Antonoff previewed a new musical project with Sam Dew and Sounwave chosen Red Hearse. The project was teased with the release of two singles, "Red Hearse" and "Honey". On July 22, 2019, Red Hearse made their television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing "Half Honey". Their debut self-titled studio anthology was released on August sixteen, 2022 via RCA Records.[51]

Shadow of the City [edit]
In 2015, Antonoff started his own music festival called Shadow of the Metropolis.[56] The festival takes place annually at The Stone Pony Summer Phase in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Shadow of the City is a i-twenty-four hours festival with merely one phase, making information technology different from other music festivals. Money from each ticket sold is donated to The Ally Coalition, an organization founded by Antonoff and his sis Rachel. Antonoff co-wrote the 2013 song "Brave" with Sara Bareilles after the two were introduced by Sara Quin of the band Tegan and Sara. Bareilles said to Billboard: "We met for breakfast one day, and I was just so enamored with him and his personality ... Personal life [edit]
When Antonoff first moved out of the family home near the finish of 2012, he lived with his sis, Rachel, on the Upper West Side of New York City. Afterward, he relocated to Brooklyn Heights to live with Lena Dunham, whom he was dating at the time.[11] The couple separated in January 2018.[82] As of December 2019, he resides in the Brooklyn Heights flat he shared with Dunham, where he also owns a home music studio.[83] Antonoff has been linked with actress Margaret Qualley since August 2021, and officially confirmed their relationship in March 2022.[84]
In June 2014, Antonoff said he was "desperate" for kids, explaining:
It merely seems like the most fun matter in the world. I've never met people who have kids who haven't looked me in the eye and been like, "Information technology's the greatest thing that's ever happened."... I recall it's biological. I'm thirty. I'g not that young, right? I'k not, like, 24 or 22. I'thousand no longer in the phase of my life where I talk virtually everything as in the futurity. Like, I'm in the future.[11]
Antonoff has spoken publicly nearly his struggles with depression, anxiety and obsessive–compulsive disorder. He claims that hearing of others' battles with depression made him feel "not better, but not solitary" and "way less scared."[85] Equally of June 2014, Antonoff was seeing both a therapist and a psychopharmacologist, while also taking anti-anxiety medications. He has germophobia which was exacerbated past a bout of pneumonia that he suffered in 2011 while recording a studio anthology for his band Fun. His pulmonologist prescribed a daily run, simply he explained that he hates it "more than than anything" because it is "ane of the most truly deadening experiences on Earth."[11]
Music is central to Antonoff's life and he explained in June 2014:
I need a hobby, and I don't desire it to be basketball ... I desire information technology to be music. And then to get away from music, I do other music. If I'm producing someone's song or writing with someone else, and then doing a Bleachers song or a Fun vocal is an escape and it keeps me creative and it keeps me locked into what I want to exercise. If something's making me crazy, I demand to go somewhere else and I don't desire that thing to exist yoga.[11]
